According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, ‘it is estimated that 1 in 5 people will or do suffer from a mental illness. The one in five could already be you and me. Well, let’s not make this a pity party. Mental health is part of our daily lives.

It was back in varsity when I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder. My thinking at the time normalised the sweaty palms and sometimes not often sleepless nights. My understanding was that I had what you called a hectic schedule, still do though. However, that was not the case, it was far more than I had anticipated.

It took a conversation with a student who shared with me how the passing of his father had an impact on his academics, to make me realise that I needed help. I immediately contacted the Academic and Development Support team to seek out help. Not only was I diagnosed with anxiety disorder, but it was a breakthrough in disguise.

Yes, I said  breakthrough. How dare I call discovering that I have anxiety disorder a breakthrough?

Well, according to me I have always believed that making a discovery about yourself is a breakthrough. A breakthrough in a sense that it empowers you to learn more about yourself and triggers. A breakthrough in the sense that you start becoming more aware of your environment and the harm it can bring to you. A breakthrough because when one aspect of your life is affected other aspects are challenged.

Let me bring you in on how the beautiful journey to self-awareness has been beneficial in bettering my mental health.

I have had the courage to identify the things that make me happy and those that don’t make me happy. I have seen the importance of removing myself from the people that negatively impact my mental health. I found activities that bring out the best in me. I discovered my voice and how to use it effectively.

The journey is not always smooth, however one thing I can tell you is that it is worth it. Dare I say this to you reader, look after your mental health. Take some time to identify the things that are impacting you negatively. Look inwardly to rediscover the person that you are meant to be and pour into yourself.

My sister and brother look after your mental health in your early twenties. This will benefit you in your thirties, forties and fifties. Confront it head on. Seek help if you must. Pray and meditate. Take time off social media. Heal your inner child that is crying out for help. Do whatever it takes but just don’t forget to look after your mental health for you.

I hope this helps someone.

Love and light.
