As someone who reads African literature, I am open-minded and passionate about expanding my worldview. Therefore, I explore reading material that spans beyond the African continent. When Dr Viktore Frankl’s book Man’s Search For Meaning called, I answered.
Or perhaps it is because as human beings, we are inherently inclined to search for meaning in our lives.
A Man’s Search for Meaning is a timeless classic that emerges from the horrors of the Holocaust in Auschwitz and other concentration camps. In it Dr Viktore reflects on everyday life, within the camps and his personal struggle for survival.
What captured my soul were two profound truths he so powerfully expounds on:
1.Man Can Achieve Fulfillment Through Love
2.Everyone Has His Own Vocations or Mission In Life To Carry Out
Man Can Achieve Fulfilment Through Love
At our core, human desires are rooted in love. Much of what we seek to fulfill is influenced by what we see, feel and experience. Our consciousness of our value is shaped by our psychological, physical, mental or social environments.
An environment can either affirm our self-worth or trigger hopelessness.
When we begin to question our self-worth, we must return to love–the love that affirms our existence and grounds our humanity. For our greatest fulfillment is found not merely in our desires, but in love itself.
Everyone has His Own Vocations or Mission In Life To Carry Out
We are each born with an assignment uniquely our own. One of life’s greatest responsibilities is to discover that assignment and courageously fulfill it.
This mission is personal. It is revealed over time. Destiny calls us to emerge fully–to own our existence and rise into our highest selves.
We must pay attention to how we show up. We must remain open to what life is revealing. And we must carry out the purpose entrusted to our souls.
Even in the unimaginable suffering of a concentration camp, Dr Viktore found meaning.
And so can we.
Your life has meaning.
