Lesson two- Perspective matters
December 27, 2022

As promised, I will be sharing some lessons I have learnt in my twenties.

Count it a blessing when you have the courage to let go. To let go of the ideas planted by yourself or society. The ideas that you have made become your realities. One very common idea is that “you must acquire this and that at a certain age”. Let it go and be at peace.

We are not ready to have a conversation about how our parents lived in different economic times than we did. It made sense for them to acquire their assets at a young age. The environment was conducive and the standard of living permitted them to do so. Social media was not predominant, and the era of hashtags did not exist.

We on the other hand are living in the era of social media, hashtags and lifestyles etc. According to the World Economic Forum more than 60% of Africa’s population is under 25. Young Africans are expected to constitute 42% of the global youth by 2030. Let’s not forget the widespread youth unemployment and inequalities that exist in South Africa.

Hello COVID-19 and the escalating humanitarian crisis? As young people, we are faced with so much and therefore we need to let go.

Let go of the comparison that has made you believe that you are inadequate because you don’t have certain assets. Let go of the timelines that have increased your anxiety. Let go of the fear of believing that it won’t get better. Let go of the pressure you succumb to because of what you see on social media. Let go of the crowd or friends that put pressure on you. Let go of people defining what success means to you.

I urge you to let go.

Be at peace with your pace.

One thing I am most certain about is that you are not where you used to be. Therefore, let go and yes believe that it will get better. It won’t be like this forever. Just keep on working on yourself, goals and dreams.

It will happen.

Just let go and be at peace.
