IN AFRICA now: Political killings in South Africa, nothing new here!

When I learned about the passing of Mr Albert Ojwang, I was utterly devastated and still am. I am battling to comprehend his passing. First as an African and a blogger myself makes it very difficult to come to terms with. Again, as an African heavily invested in African matters it infuriates me . Yes, I may have not known him in a personal capacity. However, it is because his voice spoke to Africa and about Africa.

The role of bloggers in society

I personally don’t take the role of bloggers in society for granted. If you want to have an authentic view of a country after you have conducted your research. My best bet is to consult bloggers. Bloggers have a gift of sharing some of the very authentic truths about society in a very simple and concise manner. Their authenticity comes from their interactions with people, reading and observing their environments.

Bloggers live in a world full of problems, solutions and possibilities. They are reserved with untamed spirits. Silence is very loud for bloggers. Justice is at the centre of their existence. Bloggers cannot unsee injustice. Bloggers cannot turn a blind eye to the brutally taking place around them. Bloggers cannot rest when there is no peace.

The role of bloggers in society is to amplify the cause and to stand for truth. Their role is to be the eyes, ears and understanding for the people. Their role is to give perspective where misunderstanding takes over. In the most graceful way, be the voice of reason when politics clouds our judgment. Claim and realign our national identity in the most respectful way.

Therefore, it is important that we protect bloggers at all costs. Their meaningful contribution is felt in ways I cannot even describe.

With that said, to the Ojwang family may you find peace, comfort and clarity. My desire is for police brutality to end in Kenya.
