Tsitsi Dangarembga is the girl she thinks she is. A while back I reviewed her debut novel Nervous Conditions. By a while back, I would say seven years ago or so. One thing I can share is that Tsitsi is a brilliant writer and storyteller. I was not planning on reviewing ‘’This Mournable body’’ because “Nervous Conditions” is a sequel. I did not read ‘’The Book of Not’’. Again, I thought why not just share a short lesson taken from the book.

For those that are new to my page, I review books written by African authors. I celebrate African literature and storytelling to dispel the negative narratives about Africa. In the mix of my book reviews, I shape and influence policy decisions as my contribution to Africa’s development. Don’t be alarmed, maybe consider purchasing my book recommendations.

As I mentioned prior, I was not planning on reviewing this book. I wanted to read all three books and have a more in depth review. However, I thought let me share my lesson. I want to use the character of Tambudzai to raise awareness.

There is an aspect of Tambu in us and our lives. The little girl in us that was overlooked because of our gender. The little girl that was deprived of opportunities to better herself because of gender. The only time an opportunity presented itself, a life had to be lost. That is the story of Tambudzai. I don’t think that she would have gotten that opportunity had she not lost her brother. As tragic as loss is, her story is a reminder that we need to let go of the familiar for us to have an encounter with our greatness.

The familiar has a way of shielding us and it embraces complacency. This is how it is done or supposed to be done. Waking up every morning fetching firewood and assuming the role of a caretaker. Whilst your brother is exempt from these duties because of gender. You unknowingly accept setbacks and disregard your place in society. It is only when your brother’s days are cut that you are awarded an opportunity to go to school.

Tambudzai’s life is a reminder to us all, that just because you have not been exposed to opportunities. It does not disqualify you from the market of opportunities. Your lack of exposure to an opportunity does not define your worth. Even before the opportunity presents itself you are worth it.

When Tambu got her breakthrough she discovered her intelligence and resilience. As with you, when those doors open you will discover your resilience and that you indeed are designed for greatness.  Tambu’s life, like with all our lives, always takes a turn. The difference is that sometimes not all hardships make us strong.

Worth the read.
