After some time off social media, I cannot return without writing a tribute to an online friend.
The year was 2016 to be exact and I just completed my studies in university. I was also browsing for content that would enhance my education. To be honest, I was also so tired of listening to conversations that weren’t solutions or transformation driven. Therefore, I took my time to browse and browse.
From time to time, I had been listening to the late Xolani Gwala. Now, the challenge was that my schedule began to collide with his show and I needed to find a morning radio slot. There he was on his first day on radio 702 Eusebius McKaiser a beautiful gift to my mornings. It was his first day on radio 702 and a beautiful online affair.
To this day, I still remember his first conversation live on air. I listened, acquired knowledge and I was moved by Eusebius. I loved the way he discussed intergenerational poverty which I knew nothing about at the time. I loved the way he would engage with his guests. I also loved how he held his guests accountable.
Eusebius was a gift to radio and to Africa. I heard it in his voice when he firmly spoke about matters relating to South Africa. He was frank, unapologetic and informed. He raised his views from a place of love because he desperately wanted to see change.
Eusebius lived an intentional life. His voice echoed transformation. McKaiser’s views were a gateway to shaping society. His opinions triggered answers and interrupted toxic patterns. He was the fierce voice of reasoning and shaping.
He deposited so much wisdom into my life through his moving conversations. This indeed was a beautiful online affair. Let me just say, thank you so much Eubi for a life well lived. My feet touched Radio 702 because of you. You once trusted me with your listeners and gave my views a chance. I will forever remain eternally grateful.
Now, my only hope is that because you displayed what courage looks like. May many more Eubi’s multiply. Eubi’s that will drive transformative conversations. The Eubi’s that will dismantle racism, inequalities and corruption in South Africa.
Rest well Eubi, until we meet again.
