Story Time
According to UNESCO “International Mother Language Day recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind. UNESCO believes education, based on the first language or mother tongue, must begin from the early years as early childhood care and education is the foundation of learning”.
International Mother Language Day is connected to my heritage as an African. My language is not only a form of expression however, also rooted where I come from. My language is attached to my identity as an African.
International Mother Language Day is a reminder that as we teach children to speak their mother tongue, we are also preserving our heritage as Africans.
Bottom Line
We need to ensure that we teach children their mother tongue for us to preserve our heritage. Our heritage separates us from the world.
