I was only seven years when I was taught about rape. My village mom employed by the South African Police Services (SAPS) came home one day very disheartened. She was working on a very sensitive case concerning the violation of a young girl. So when she got home, she sat us down with my siblings and taught us about this sensitive matter. Every case concerning the violation against children we knew about and were taught about rape. It was never easy hearing about rape especially at a tender age. My village mom’s concern was ensuring we knew that it existed and more importantly that RAPE is a violation.
Fast forward to my adult self is, RAPE will forever remain a violation!
In 2024, the Action Society reported in accordance with the crime statistics that rape is reported every 12 minutes in South Africa. This means that every 12 minutes women and children are violated. Now how many of these cases does the media bring to our attention? Or could this be a gimmick used to silence the voices of the many violations? I don’t know what it is however, I will keep on echoing the sentiment that we are not angry enough as South Africans.
Justice is a myth and our voices are whispers. Our hearts are heavy. Our eyes are watery and every time we blink once we bleed. We are bleeding because our system enables predators to roam around freely. We are bleeding because our system shields predators.
It is because compassion is now a theory and not practiced. Our human instincts are buried with our principles. What we have left is erect genitals penetrating innocence and birthing generational traumas.
Enough, it ends with Cwecwe and the many that have been silenced. It ends with ‘’women need to dress appropriately’’ and all the other problematic statements. Cwecwe was violated in school uniform.
Rape is a violation! Rape needs to end!
A young girl was violated in South Africa. I plead that we sign the petition. #justiceforcwecwe #endrapenow
