Lesson 5: Be discerning in social settings!

The one aspect that I will always be grateful for is traveling, more especially on the African continent. It is a blessing and highly an honour to get to see the African continent as an African. I believe publications underplay the beauty that Africa is.  I am of the view that sometimes, we just need to be in Africa for us to truly experience her. I will never take it for granted. It is indeed grace to travel.

I’ve seen the impact that traveling on the African continent has had on me as an African hailing from South Africa. All I can say is that traveling is spiritual. What do I mean when I say this exactly?

Traveling is spiritual, especially traveling on the African continent. We are courageous enough to purchase these costly tickets and hope to have the time of our lives. We take the risk of flying or using buses that we aren’t certain will make it safely. We set out to go even when we are uncertain if the country will receive us. We just hope and pray that everything goes well in our favour.

Traveling is spiritual

When our feet touch the African soil, we inhale new air and exhale what we are accustomed to. We walk on soil that has historical significance. We unknowingly transcend into a new culture and heritage. We are ushered into lands that are roaming with positivity and negativity. Yet, we choose to stay because there is more to encounter. We unconsciously make contact with those who have walked these paths. We are courageous enough to open our hearts, minds, bodies, soul and spirit to learning about the country.

We surrender our own understanding to immerse ourselves with what the land possesses. We surrender our own way of life to learn a new way of life. We surrender our dietary requirements to be nourished with new cuisine. We unconsciously renew our taste buds and as we take new food it heals parts of our souls that we never knew existed. We compromise our health because with every new territory we welcome certain illnesses.

We make contact with people and places that integrate us into a new culture. We make cultural exchanges and this helps enhance our identity. We explore lands that are filled with pain, hope and beautiful people. We make contact with people and unknowingly create eternal bonds. We create lifelong memories.

Our minds are cultivated through traveling. Our souls are awakened. There is enrichment of one’s thought process that takes place. A rebirth of a new mind. Unlearning also takes place, we unlearn to relearn. Just when we thought we knew life, a whole new life is presented to us. Our hope is revived and there is a level of peace that we experience.

Traveling is spiritual. Even as we swim on the land’s beaches when the salty sea water touches our feet, we heal our need to belong because we are actually one. Traveling makes us realise that we are no different. We have differences that require being embraced. When you get the time please travel more especially on the African continent. I am yet to see more African countries.

I am not affiliated to any political party. I am affiliated to the Africans.
