Book review: War Party by Greg Arde

This year, I want to make it a habit to review all the books I read. It is very crucial that I share this literature because reading has opened many doors for me. Therefore, I commit to sharing all the books that I read and speak to our Awakening Africans theme.

Indra Nooyi’s book found me by the way. In January 2024, I was on a quest to find books to read for the first six months of the year. I really did not have any picks or titles in mind. I was just looking for different genres and books that would be fitting to my budget. So, I set out to look for books online and there I found a bookstore nearby.

My little sister and I set out to look for this bookstore in the Westrand. Yes, we found a small heaven and took our time searching for books. In and out we went around the bookstore, searching for books. It was when I heard ‘’the Nigerian authors can be found’’ on this aisle when I turned my head and walked straight to that aisle. There she was, Indra Nooyi the last copy of her book in my hands and into my basket.

My friend and I are of the view that one needs to be ready for certain books. I am glad that Indra Nooyi’s book found me ready. It took some time for me to gather myself and come on this platform to review her book. However, I think it’s because every chapter leaves room for reflection.

This is a book about a trailblazer who comes from humble beginnings and relentlessly shattered the glass ceiling. Indra takes us on a journey of hope and centres purpose in everything that she does. Her zealous spirit cultivates her excellence. She is who she says she is and believes it. Indra wears her heart and passion on her sleeves.

Purpose

I believe there are three lessons that I took from reading her book. That purpose, leadership skills and family cannot be separated. In terms of purpose, you cannot fulfill purpose when you are not grounded. One needs to be grounded in order to fulfill purpose. Purpose is associated with your destiny and therefore you need to be grounded.

Leadership

As a leader you need a measure of humility to lead a team effectively. Leadership is a role not a possession therefore as a leader you need to be humble. Humble enough to listen, observe and engage. The true essence of leadership is servanthood. Be open and willing to serve.

Family

Family is a source of love and support. In everything that you do, ensure that you have a strong and supportive family structure. Family will uphold when life experiences put you down. When failure creeps in,  family  whispers hope and shows you love.

Be ready to think critically and to reflect about yourself when reading Indra’s book. I highly recommend this read.
