I felt the true meaning of Akwaaba when my feet touched the soil. An open declaration of a sincere heart expressing gratitude from a place of love.
I thought I comprehended the meaning of embrace until I visited Ghana. My interpretation of embrace before I visited Ghana was simply welcome and have a pleasant stay.
Let’s say embrace in Ghana is very different.
The embrace I am referring to is the kind that has the humidity leaving my skin with a refreshing natural glow. The kind of embrace that has you finish a plate of red-red and plantain then contemplating on becoming vegan. The kind of embrace that reinforces courtesy because of the friendliness that the Ghanaians exude.
This is the kind of embrace that reminds you why kindness is a choice and Ghanaians choose to be kind. This is the kind of embrace that has you relying on a perfect stranger to be your brother’s keeper. This is the kind of embrace that has you seeing the importance of community for Africa to be prosperous.
It took a visit to Ghana for me to fully comprehend the true meaning of Ghana being the gateway of Africa. It’s the warm spirit of the Ghanaians that will have developed your curiosity about the country. The stunning coastline and rich history of Ghana.
I think what still blows my mind is apart from Ghana being the hub of black history, it’s the patriotic Ghanaians that are always ready to teach you about the history. It’s the Ghanaians honouring their ancestor’s resilience by resembling the love for their country.
Chale, Ghana embraced me.
