Story Time

The creative industry is a dynamic space. It is energetic and constantly evolving.  In the midst of the fast-paced platform, creatives are first human before being creatives.

Being a creative is the most difficult yet rewarding aspect of life. You are given the opportunity to create and share your work with the world. The world has a piece of your passion. The world can appreciate your work. However, the downside to being a creative is that because your passion is displayed, your life is exposed. When your life is exposed, it stimulates criticism.

It saddens me that we live in a world where people tend to forget that people are human beings. We feel, we cry and we have emotional breakdowns. We sometimes feel inadequate. Sometimes we battle to express our fears and realities. We fear being judged and made a mockery of. Social media doesn’t make it any easier.

Social media is slowly becoming a platform full of predators, so-called perfectionists and self-proclaimed cyberbullies. Predators because any opportunity to prey on those who feel weary is taken. The so-called perfectionists are those that feel the need to correct ,when people just want to be themselves the best way they know how to. The self-proclaimed cyberbullies who don’t hold off at any given time or day to depreciate everything that you put out.

Social media is no longer what it used to be.

The “twitter streets” are not “safe streets”. The “so-called twitter streets” are people who at any given moment are ready to judge and attack you.

What happened to showing empathy? Understanding that everyone is human. I thought that social media was a platform designed to socialise and connect with people across the world. Now the social media “streets” are dictating how we should live our lives, dance or move about. Every updated post is accompanied with a “why is she doing that?”.

Compassion goes a long way

Compassion is the ability to recognise that we are all human. Compassion is understanding that showing vulnerability is not easy and when you do, it requires a level of appreciation. Compassion is the maturity to recognise our differences and embrace them. Compassion is clicking on that like button to boost the confidence of your friend. Compassion is creating a safe space for people to be themselves.

Bottom Line

There is so much more in a post and maybe if we view posts with compassion, we could save lives. Silence has a deafening voice. Parables or riddles are messages that need our attention. So, if we want to be a better people, we need to wear compassion on our sleeves. Compassion will save us from ourselves. Today, we leave the government alone and learn about compassion.

Compassion goes a long way.

Rest in peace Riky Makhado.
