August-December theme: Grow the creative industry in Africa
Story time
Creative industries are the “breathing spaces” in society. Arts and culture contribute significance to the nation. The outbreak of the pandemic was a reminder that the place of the creative industry in growing the economy cannot be overlooked. The intention of Department of Arts and Culture in South Africa is to “develop and preserve SA culture ensuring social cohesion and nation building”.
Arts and culture give expression to heritage, preserve culture and add meaning to historical encounters. The outbreak of the pandemic has revealed some of the real struggles faced by artists and creative entrepreneurs. One devastating aspect was the closure of the Johannesburg Jazz Mecca due to the impact of COVID-19.
The Cultural and creative industries have the potential to create jobs, drive economic growth and development. It is the lack of visibility that affects these industries from expansion. We need to create more platforms that create the visibility of artists and creative entrepreneurs. The work done by creatives cannot go unnoticed.
In August, we extensively write stories about the creative industry, what it entails, how we can rescue this sector and developing more creative entrepreneurs to drive economic growth in Africa.
Happy August again to you all readers and thank you for reading!
